Preparing Students for Life,

Now and Eternal!

Living Oaks Academy is a two day per week Christ-centered academy which offers students a gentle place to learn and grow. We view children as persons made in the image of God, who are due an education that is full of Beauty and Truth.

Using a hybrid homeschooling model, we aim to partner with parents who desire a structured learning experience to complement their homeschools.  Students attend Living Oaks Academy on Tuesdays and Thursdays, allowing parents to be flexible on the remaining days in educating their children.

Deuteronomy 6:5-7

You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.

  • Living Oaks Academy is a ministry of Calvary Chapel Morgantown, a non-denominational church in Morgantown, WV, which seeks to emphasize spiritual unity among followers of Jesus Christ.  It is our policy to give preeminence to preaching the gospel, to studying the Word of God, and to exalting the Lord Jesus Christ.

    • We believe that the only true basis of Christian fellowship is Christ’s (Agape) love, which is greater than any differences we possess and without which we have no right to claim ourselves Christians.
    • We believe worship of God should be spiritual. Therefore, we remain flexible and yielded to the leading of the Holy Spirit to direct our worship.
    • We believe worship of God should be inspirational. Therefore, we give a great place to music in our worship.
    • We believe worship of God should be intelligent. Therefore, we have great emphasis upon teaching the Word of God that He might instruct us how He should be worshipped.
    • We believe worship of God should be fruitful. Therefore, we look for His love in our lives as the supreme manifestation that we have truly been worshipping Him.

In order to identify the church as conservative in theology, and evangelical in spirit, we set forth this general statement of beliefs:

    1. We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative Word of God and inerrant in the original writings (2 Timothy 3:16).

    2. We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This triune God created all, upholds all, and governs all (Genesis 1:1, Matthew 28:19, John 1:1-2, John 10:30).

    3. We believe in Jesus Christ’s eternal existence and His incarnation as God’s only begotten Son. We believe in His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles and teaching, His substitutionary atoning death, bodily resurrection, ascension into heaven, perpetual intercession for His people and personal, visible return to earth (John 3:16, Philippians 2:6-7, Matthew 1:18, Matthew 1:23, Hebrews 4:15, I Peter 3:18, Acts 1:9,11, the Gospels).

    4. We believe that the lost and sinful man must be saved, and that man’s only hope of redemption is through faith in the shed blood of Jesus Christ and that only by God’s grace and through faith alone are we saved (John 3:16-19, John 5:24, Romans 2:23, Romans 5:8-9, Ephesians 2:8-10, Titus 3:5).

    5. We believe in the Holy Spirit, who came forth from the Father and Son to convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, and to regenerate, sanctify and empower for ministry all who believe in Christ. We believe the Holy Spirit indwells every believer in Jesus Christ and that He is our abiding Helper, Teacher and Guide. We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit and in the exercise of all the Biblical gifts of the Spirit (John 14:26, John 16:13, Romans 8:9, I Corinthians 3:16, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

    6. We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the unsaved; they that are saved unto resurrection of life, and they that are unsaved unto the resurrection of condemnation (John 5:28-29).

    7. We believe in the Spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ (I Corinthians 12:12-13, Galatians 3:26-28).

    8. We believe in the two New Testament ordinances of water baptism and the Lord’s Supper (communion). These ordinances are observed in obedience to our Lord Jesus Christ, as acts of love and devotion, and are not considered necessary for salvation (Matthew 28:19-20, Luke 22:19-20, I Corinthians 11:24-25).

  • Our educational philosophy is that which was founded by Charlotte Mason, also called a living education. Her method is based on the knowledge that God created each child in His own image and is due a full education.

This living method of education uses rich literature called “living books” rather than dry textbooks, the most Living Book being God's Word, the Bible.  As we look at all subjects in the light of Scripture, children make right relationships with the subjects they study; and as “education is the science of relationships”, children naturally make relationships with their Creator and His creation. In doing so, they form a Biblical Worldview.

Habits of excellent execution and focused attention are taught by keeping lessons short in the younger years (about 10-20 minutes) and increasing the length as they mature. Most formal lessons are done in the morning with time for learning through play and other enrichment studies.

Much of their work comes in the form of narration (telling back in your own words) and composition rather than worksheets and pointed questions. After a single reading, the child narrates (either orally or written depending on ability) and lessons are discussed to increase understanding. There is no traditional homework, busywork or extra seatwork.

There is a “wide feast” of studies such as:

    •          Bible Study and Apologetics
    •      The core academic studies of Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic
    •          Nature Walks and Nature Study (observational science)
    •          Experimental Science, History, Citizenship
    •          Art and Music appreciation
    •          Handicrafts (purposeful projects rather than “glitter and glue” projects)
    •          Singing and Exercise
    •          Service Projects
    •      Map, compass work and scouting
    •          Habit and moral training
    •          Much outdoor time

By utilizing children's natural learning ability and presenting a generous curriculum, the child is allowed to digest what is appropriate for him or her at the appropriate stage. This leads to a well-rounded individual and is fitting for the busy boy, gifted child, and delayed student.

The Charlotte Mason method is a method that nurtures a love for learning and reinforces good life long habits, rather than just presenting a body of information. It grows a person, rather than fills a bucket.

  • At Living Oaks Academy we acknowledge children as persons made in the image of God. We respect each student as a whole person, educating his body, mind, and soul. Each individual child is able to relate to our Creator and our world at a level dependent on their God-given ability. Therefore, we seek to help students grow and flourish in a relationship with God by inspiring them through a wide feast of subjects which allows for each child to discern God’s plan for their lives.
